Hi everyone,

I am looking into building a laptop. I was wondering if anyone would happen to know or have built a laptop. I know they are typically custom built by some major corporation. I'd like to make my own. Anyone know where to shop for parts?

Thanks,
jade>:):O>

How about a backpack?

There are some new slimline design components that could be put to such use...but getting parts to build a laptop is hard. Mfr.s have a lock on most of the stuff you'll want.

But, if you build a backpack model, you could wear one of those 50's beanie caps with the propeller on top to help cool the unit!

Seriously, (apologize for the chicanery, mean NO offense) don't think you can get the parts...which will leave you to reinventing the wheel.

'Course being told you can't is enough for some people to get it done.

Jade,

Alot of manufacturers do have a lock on parts. However I have a few website links for you. These are sites I've been getting my replacement laptop parts from so finding parts to assemble your own laptop shouldn't be too difficult. They are worth looking into atleast. Granted you'll have to mix and match manufactured parts...but the prices are somewhat decent.

Let me know if these links helped or if I can help more...

Barring in mind, mix and match on laptops is VERY aukward due to companies having there own specialised parts and thusly having there own compatability probs.

It aint like building a desktop!!

There are 2 types of computer, the prototype and the obsolete!!

There is a company called Transmeta that makes a new 900 MHRz Motherboard and battery pack for laptops and also for the NEC fanless workstation Crusoe or whatever they call it. They claim that this workstation has a sound rating of 20db which is about a wisper.

It will be hard for anyone to buy parts for these things.

You might be better off to build something of the Via Eden Mini-ITX Platform. If you do not like my post feel free to point out your opinion or my errors.

gargouille,
Have you ever called up some of these companies who make the parts and tell them you belong to a comapany who is thinking about manufacturing laptops and would like parts with white papers to begin research? -- I suppose its why phone phreaking exists... Try Intel, you might be suprised on what you'll get there:)

Enkrypted,
I've been to those places. Have you tried any of those parts? Did they work for you?

Plank,
Compatibility problems exist everywhere including the desktop. I expect to be running into some when building a laptop. If not I will be disappointed-- I will be disapointed in those huge corporations who charge so much for their laptops when they are so easy to build.

ceh4702,
Is there a specific page you would recommend me looking at?

Thanks everyone for your responses. Keep posting new findings, this could be interesting for all:)

Thanks,

Jade,

I've hade no problems with those companies. All the parts I've ordered through them have had no compatibility issues and they are pretty quick with shipping the product. I would recommend them. Enkrypted
