browser not working - msg: application not found

strange problem:
firefox prompted for update. installed updates half way through. got disconnected. update was not finished. then resumed and updated. firefox not working. un-installed firefox. used ie-explorer. when i type an address, it gives message: "application not found". it's thinking that the url is a folder/directory/or application. anybody seen this before?

In IE, Tools, Internet Options, Programs
Reset to defaults (at bottom)
Control Panel, Add/Remove Programs,on the left choose Set Windows Access and Defaults, and set IE as the default browser.

Reboot.

Have you had a go with System Restore, reverting back to before the disconnection?

thanks a bunch guys. it turned out to be "under file / work offline was cheked" somehow this happened. maybe when i installed and un-installed the firefox.
