Brooktrout TR1034 T1 configuration

We are attempting to set up DID faxing between the IP Office (406V2 - 3.1.65) and a RightFAX server with a Brooktrout TR1034 installed. The Brooktrout board is showing a green light, but we can't pass any traffic either way. I've set up short codes based on other information found on this list server (thanks!), but I think the problem is in the Line configuration. How do I set it to talk directly to the Brooktrout board?

Here's what I think Brooktrout is recommending:

Channel Allocation: 1->24

Incoming/Outgoing Groups: 1 (just because of the short codes we have set up)

Direction: Both

Bearer: Voice

Type: E&M – Tie

Dial Type: DTMF Dial

Inbound & Outbound Trunk Type: Wink-Start

We had it set like this on Friday when we were testing, for the most part, except that the channel direction was 24->1 and we didn't have any of the channels set to 'Out of Service' (they have an 8-port Brooktrout board). That's why I want another pair of eyes to check our configuration!

Thanks for your help.

I have only set up Rightfax once and it was a nightmare. I just had a hunt group set up in IP Office that had the analog extensions for Rightfax in them. Then I just had the incoming numbers pointed at the hunt group. I guess one thing that probably made this work though was that they had all faxes go to one user and then that user distributed. So I didn't have to do any routing based on who the fax should go to.

Forgot to mention:

All inbound voice traffic is coming into a dual PRI card (they have 2 PRIs). The customer added a second dual PRI card to the system, not knowing that only one of the ports would be supported on a 406V2. One of the T1 ports on the new card is connected directly to the Brooktrout T1 port via a cross-over cable.

We have the line set for T1.

Test faxes try to go out the new line group to the fax server, but the Brooktrout never answers, and we see nothing in RightFAX. In Call Status, all we see is 'Dial'.

Test faxes from RightFAX come back as "Phone Line Problem." We see nothing in Call Status on outbound fax attempts.

Thanks again.

Are you positive that you have a 24 port brooktrout card? The 1034 comes in many port flavors.

Do you have line signaling set to CO and not CPE? Set allocation to 1>24. You should think of the ipo as the central office feeding the brooktrout board. You will also need to adjust incoming digits. You may have to set clock quality to unsuitable.

It is entirely possible that you may have to set the brooktrout board channels as half outgoing and half incoming. I only say that since I had to do that a couple of years ago back in the 2.1.27 days.

I have done this same thing. It was easy to make indound calls. The outbound calls were alot harder to make work. i had 4 digit extensions. I had the incoming call route go to a 4 digit short code and point to the line group of the fax server.

The line setup was like this
it is set up E&M Tie Wink/Wink, DTMF dialing
I only have 4 channels in service

I was just looking at TR1000 - White Paper #1784. It mentioned treating the TR1034 as a PBX. Does that mean you need to create a custom cable so the Transmit and Receive are correct? I don’t know if the IP Office does that for you. I remember connecting old Panasonic DBS’s together with a T-1 and one side needed the Transmit/Receive flipped.

I just saw your second post indicated a cross over cable was being used. You're crossing 12/45 not 12/36 right?

can you confirm that you have the activate channel box ticked in the board configuration screens for all 8 channewls. IIRC this is not the default state. Likewise do have the correct bump code for 8 channels?

Take Care

If at first you don't succeed, skydiving is not for you.

I haven't been able to try this in person, but the customer says the phone system "lights up like a Christmas tree" when he plugs in the T1 cable with the line set as KWING suggests. However, he installed a dual T1/PRI card in a 406V2 which already contained a dual T1/PRI card. Any thoughts?
