Even though I am using a 56k modem the data transfer from my modem is very slow. I am using motorola SM56PCI speaker phone modem, but when I connect to the ISP through dial up networking, the bps rarely exceeds 9600. What could be the reason? The ISP is not the problem because the internet is fast on others computer. Could it be the phone line or is it that my modem is corrupted..if the modem is corrupted how can I find out?

How old is the computer and modem? Could you have (gasp!) an old UART chip on the motherboard or modem?

Have the local phone company check out your terminal...they likely have a problem with noise.
Also make sure the modem settings are asking the computer to hook up at something ridiculous, like 115,200. It never will, but will default to the highest it can achieve.
Find your modem in Device Manager and run the diagnostic on it...then examine the modemlog.txt that's created and see if there are any clues.
Your ISP offers no support?

I found a little bit of info for you here:
Doesn't solve your problem directly, but have a read, and search for updated drivers while you can.
If not a driver issue, must be a setting somewhere as the modem in question is V90 compliant - I'll have a bit more of a dig. My suggestions are what I would try myself. If incorrect, I welcome corrections to my rather limited knowledge. Andy.

These may help .

... Suggested by Ricky Johnson (johnson.ricky@verizon.net).
This tip works on ALL Windows 95/98/ME and NT4/2000 systems with MS Internet Explorer 4/5/6 installed.
This Registry tip speeds up internet/remote (using Windows Explorer and/or Internet Explorer) browsing process considerably on most MS Windows 32-bit machines connected to a network and/or remote computer(s).
This actually fixes a BUG in MS Windows OSes that scan shared (remote) folders/files across the network for Scheduled Tasks, and can add a delay as long as 30 seconds (!), because it uses extra time to search
the remote computer(s).
To do this, open Regedit (Win95/98/ME) or Regedt32 (WinNT4/2000) and go to:

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\ExplorerRemoteComputer\NameSpace
Highlight this value:

{D6277990-4C6A-11CF-8D87-00AA0060F5BF}

and delete it: right-click on it -> select Delete -> click OK.

RECOMMENDED: Export (BACKUP) this Registry key to a REG file FIRST, to be able to restore it (by running the REG file) if necessary. In
Regedit: highlight the key name in the left hand pane -> click "Registry" from the menu -> select "Export Registry File..." -> type a file name in the "File name" field -> browse to the destination of your choice -> push the Save button.

This Registry change takes effect immediately.
Just start MS IE while connected to the network/internet to see the difference.

Load Web Pages Faster
Increase Web page loading speed by doubling the number of possible concurrent open connections.
Imagine a web page has 20 images and some text. In order for your browser to get all these files, it opens 2 or 4 concurrent connections, depending on the Web server. Increasing the number of open connections allows for faster retrieving of the data.

On Windows 9x/Me set or add these dword registry values:

MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server=00000020
MaxConnectionsPerServer=00000010

under this key:

HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings\Connections.

On Windows NT/2K set or add these dword registry values:

MaxConnectionsPer1_0Server=00000020
MaxConnectionsPerServer=00000020

under the above key as well as this key:

HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet Settings.

Another boost for web pages to load faster,It works for me had it past 3 yrs
For 98, 98SE & ME Start regedit go to >

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\
Services\VxD\MSTCP\ServiceProvider]

"LocalPriority f3,01,00,00
"HostsPriority f4,01,00,00
"DnsPriority d0,07,00,00
"NetbtPriority d1,07,00,00
"Class 08,00,00,00
"ProviderPath"="%windir%\\system\\wsock32.dll"

Right click each entry and modify to change to values below,save reboot.
[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\
Services\VxD\MSTCP\ServiceProvider]

"LocalPriority 05,00,00,00
"HostsPriority 06,00,00,00
"DnsPriority 07,00,00,00
"NetbtPriority 08,00,00,00
"Class 08,00,00,00
"ProviderPath"="%windir%\\system\\wsock32.dll"
