Hi all,

I was told that on Windows NT 4.0 workstation that you could bootup and reach a command prompt (like DOS) instead of the GUI. Is this true? And if it is, how might someone accomplish this?

Thanks,

Kaleb

No, you can't.

NT is based on its own kernel, and not on the old DOS engine. The closest thing you'll get is either with an MS-DOS boot disk, or with 'cmd' - NTs command prompt. [auto] MCSE NT4/W2K

There is third party software that you could use to boot to a command prompt in NT. "NTFS Pro" or something like that.

as dhawthorn says, you CAN'T boot to a command prompt in NT.

sysinternals/winternals do have some software which will allow you to read ntfs filestore from a win9x boot floppy (freeware) or read/write ntfs filestore from same (costs).

If you happen to have a 2k or XP install CD lying around, you can actually use its recovery console with an NT installation. That is something like a command prompt.
