Booting Problem with Windows XP

A friend of mine living about 800 km away from me has since today a severe problem.
His XP Workstation hangs during booting. You see some activity on the Hard disk and no more.
A Virus ist pretty unlikely, because he is running his Virusscanner permanent and he keeps his definitions up to date very careful.

He really does not know what is the reason. Perhaps anybody of you have an Idea

Not enough information here to provide a very good answer... Can your friend get into the OS in safe mode and do a system restore... using the system restore points option? Did your friend install any software or new hardware recently? How far into the boot process can they get? debonairOne

Thank you, it seems that it depends on NAV. It reports a fault on NAV. It tries to restart the system and it hungs.
