Hello,

I apologize if the subject line isn't clear. I'll try to marginally clarify here...

I've got a couple of "nifty" Xseries 335 servers to play with(thanks Ebay!) and have used the IBM Raid Support CD to configure RAID 1 mirroring.

I've installed Linux(RHEL 3) on both machines. Then it occurred to me that I might want to "test" that RAID 1 setup to see if it was doing what I thought it was doing...

So, after shutting down a box and powering it off, I took out drive 1 and put drive 2(the mirror I *think*) in its place. Left drive/slot 2 empty. Long story short, trying to boot the machine in this config does not work. I'm sure the more knowledgeable here are saying "duh" but the bottom line is I don't seem to have a clue about how to benefit from/use the RAID 1 capabilities of this server. BTW, I am able to return the drives to their "original slots" and successfully reboot.

Can someone gimme an education or point me to good info? And I don't mean *how* to setup RAID 1 -- I think that's working fine. Maybe. But how do I make use of a mirrored disk should the need[inevitably] arise? Hope this is clear.

Thank you for reading this and any insights you offer.

Don't switch the drives. If you want to test it while it's running, just pull a drive out and it should failover to the other drive automatically.

I'm Certifiable, not certified.
It just means my answers are from experience, not a book.

Yes,

You may now have to re-create your mirror.....

Once done, you will be able to pull the drives out on
while linux is running.....once finished testing, put the drive back in and it should remirror automatically (depending on raid settings).

Regards

Bernard
