Crazy-making instability of xp pro... file corruption...broken apps. etc pointed to hardware or boot virus problems. Even though Norton 2002 never found a boot virus... running fixboot and fixmbr on the Hd and yet another clean install has given me a machine that has run all day and been restarted 20 times without breaking. So a hardware problem seems less likely.

Question is...could there still be a boot virus on the HD that neither Norton 2003 or Viruscan can see?

How could I check out the drive further before getting down to business again next week?

<PC 2.5m P4 40gig Hd updated xp pro>

Neither one can pick up SpyWare. AdAware and cwshredder should be run regularly. Also many Trojans can hide from A-V programs.

fixmbr should have cleared out any boot virus (assuming you started recovery console from CD or write protected floppies)

Be aware - there are very few current virii that install themselves into the MBR... check your PC with a few online virus scanners - every AV scanner is bound to miss a few virii, so check with more than one.
