Boot Up Time settings

I have read most of the advice in regards to mscofig settings i.e. checking the boxes of programs you want to start etc..........

I was wondering why my Windows startup graphic page and dos page(during boot) sits there for what seems 30 - 60 sec.........Is there a program where I can change this time without affecting the startup process?

Thats the timeframe where lots of OS stuff is being loaded. My wife is a graphic designer and had installed hundreds of fonts, bringing startup to a crawl. I was able to get her to age out ones she didn't need and that greatly decreased boot time.

Im not sure I explained my problem corretly........

When I boot it takes around 2:30 - 3 min to get to my desk top..........

I finding that at a couple of the stages the boot process goes through i.e. you see the the Windows graphic and the blue cloud background , then it changes to where it is in like a dos mode for a while ..........Then your desk top appears and your programs open........

I have shut down most all un-necessary programs, but it seems that during the start screen changes some screens just sit there for 30-45sec before changing to the next sreen in the boot process.......

The whole boot process on my computer at work is less the 30 sec.........

What specifcally other then shuting off un-necessary programs at start up can I do to speed up the booting?

Do you have this computer networked to another one - ie peer to peer?
If so, changing your network bindings to NetBEUI rather than TCP-IP might sort this, it did on mine. You must make the changes to both computers though.
Let me know if this is your scenario and I'll give you help with the bindings if you need it.

Im not connected to a network.....This my home Pc and I use Verizon........

My issue is really just with the amount of time during the boot up, that the Windows 98 graphic displays before changing to the next screen in the boot up process.......
This takes about 1min to 70 sec..........



It seems to me that there may be a time setting that the grapphic is displayed could be set for a shorter time......

When I boot my computer at work (On a Network)the same Windows 98 graphic appears and changes in only a few seconds....

It seems that both boot ups go thru a simular cycle but the
work computer graphic change time is much faster.

Yes but your work pc may have a faster processor, faster harddrive larger RAM capacity boot less files as startup. I do not think there is such a thing that leaves the splash screen on longer than its loading for what would the point be.
Run Spybot Search and Destroy
and AdAware 6.0 Personal and make sure you havent picked up some nasties but its probably just your PC.
Try a Defrag and a Scandisk it might help.

Thanks for your help......I have tried all that, as you suggest.....

I know at some point just searching some of the basic computer settings.Quite some time ago (And I can't for the life of me remeber where it is now, that there was an option for the hang time of a portion of the boot....

As I think back I think I remember the setting a 30sec, but at the time was afraid to change it.......

I also thought I read somewhere you could take that graphic out and or replce it with your own.......

I have a 500.......128 mem Pent 2........My work is a little more powerfull.........

Maybe Im in lala land and barking up the wrong tree...But I thought there were some contol settings to adjust the time that graphic is displayed.........

You could look at your MSDOS.SYS file, located on the root of C: (view it in Notepad) and check under the [Options] heading for the line:
BootDelay=numeric value
This line, if it exists, determines the boot delay in seconds.
It is possible someone/something has modified this, so check it out. If it doesn't exist, it defaults, I think, to two seconds, which is fine.
If you need to add or change this line, you'll have to remove the read-only attributes of the file first, remembering to re-instate them afterwards.
