ok. i'm wanting to re-install windows with a disc that came with my Emachines 400(yes i know i have a dinosaur:0) but my pc won't boot from the cd rom(it's a dvd rom by the way). so i downloaded the driver for it. still nothing. i downloaded a win98 boot disk. and well that didn't do anything. i didn't see how i could re-install it using that. i mean the disc has all the files but i can re-install unless i boot my pc on it. please help me with this. my pc is a lil screwy because i was doing this a good few weeks ago(re-installing windows) from the hard drive. cuz u can go into options/cabs or whatnot and do it from there. well when it changed my system.ini file my trojan protector came up to alert me it had and the thing froze. so it's all screwy and if i try to install it from the pc it jus freezes. so please help. thanks alot.

First of all when you try to boot from a CD rom or DVD you your BIOS has to support it. If it has the ability you need to set the first boot device to the CD Rom.

If not then you need to boot from a floppy, create an partition, format your drive.
Make your HD bootable i.e. DOS/system files.
Then get the DOS driver for your particular CD Rom or DVD and install it.
Then you will have access to your CD to do the instalation. Hope this Helps

yea. my bios supports. i know about that. that still doesn't work. how do i make a partition file or what not? i've got the boot disk for win98 and i can use it there(i've also installed the dos drivers for my dvd rom) but i'm not sure what to type or do to make it boot. there r some files on the cd like bootcat.bin, osboot.img, etc. i'm gonna try to access these files from dos mode using mscdex. i hope it'll work. but still reply cuz i doubt it will. thanks.

-still tell me how to make that disk. cuz it would be helpful later probably. thanks.

> On setting up install from DVD player:

I have been using DVD's in systems this year, and I have found that SOME will NOT set up - IN DOS - in order for me to enable the DVD/CD-ROM to Pre-install Windows on my D: partion.

Therefore, I have had to grab a regular CD-ROM, remove the DVD player, and install the CD-ROM, load up Windows CAB files on D: drive, then remove the CD-ROM and put the DVD player back in, and then load up Windows.

It isn't with every DVD player either, just *some.*
It must have something to do with NEW hardware and OLD CODE,,,,,

I personally don't have the time, nor inclination, to make a specific boot disk for a DVD-cd-rom so I can pre-load Windows....... I just swap the DVD player out temporarily.

> So, while I can't offer you any help to set up the DVD player, I suggest you beg / borrow or buy a CD-ROM to use in order to load up in DOS.

If you want to get creative,,,,,,,, make a DOS boot disk from downloaded files off the net. (I'm sure that you don't have a boot-disk for that DVD player)
