Hello

I'm experiencing a critical error message in win 2000 pro on bootup. Winnt/System32/Config/system is missing. I've tried booting from safe mode and repairing from the win 2000 cd but to no avail. What should my next move be? Any help would be appreciated on this matter.

The file that is reported as corrupt is simply called 'system' with no extension. It's about 1 MB in size.
I've booted from the cd And tried auto repair, I've also tried the command prompt and copied system to system.old and then system.alt to system but still no succcess.
There is no file of the same name, type and size on the install CD that I can See.
I was going to try and reinstall win 2000 again over the corrupt OS but I think it removes the previous install which I dont want. Win 98 would let you refresh the old installation. Can this be done in W2K?

Winnt\system is a folder, not a file. Has about 67 files in it. Could you have renamed it accidentally? Search for System.drv and see what sub-folder it finds it in. That's the folder that should probably be named system. . .

You can start to install win2000 again , and it waill ask you if you want to repair the win2000 or not !? Mohamed Farid

Have you changed any hardware and or bios settings in your machine (particularly memory/cpu and speed settings for either)? My bios allows overclocking and I've seen this message after trying to run cpu at faster speed. If its not this, you can try the repair option. You may find this link (copy/paste whole url) useful
