W2K machine with 4 NTFS partitions

The file "boot.ini" keeps disappearing from the root of drive c:

When it goes, it becomes awkward to start up the computer.

During normal operation I have been checking that it is there and sometimes, it has gone.

I have been unable to detect any viruses or other problems with the nmachine.

Can anybody shed any light on this or suggest a "trick" to prevent the file from beng deleted by any malicious code?
