This is the boot.ini file contents now :

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

How would I modify this file to show the options like you get when pressing the F8 key when the computer boots. Something like for 5 secs.

If that cannot be done, then I would like to have Windows Professional come up for like 5 secs that would give me time to hit the F8 key.

I had a dual boot system but have reformatted and now am only running XP Pro and I miss the functionality for the boot screen.

Thanks

Just edit the timeout value:

[boot loader]
timeout=5
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn

goto system in the control panel and then advanced then boot options then startup and recovery. be carefull.

As far as I am aware of, there is now way to force the appearance of the advanced boot option screen.

Frank4d's suggestion above will not help as you plan. (By this point the option is gone).

You could edit the boot.ini to add some of the options, such as Safe Mode as choices to be made:

Thanks bcastner. I ended up with this:

[boot loader]
timeout=15
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect /NoExecute=OptIn
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional Safe Mode" /fastdetect

Now I can access the F8 key during the 15 secs or just select the safe mode.

Thanks again

Hi There;I have a windows xp pro server running 6 harddisks a coulple of them are slower than others,not a problem.Just when I boot up the computer it takes a few seconds to start them all,and I don't have a boot delay in my bios.Is there a way to get a 12-15sec.delay on start up,(then boot into windows?) by editing this boot.ini.

[boot loader]
timeout=30
default=multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS
[operating systems]
multi(0)disk(0)rdisk(0)partition(1)\WINDOWS="Microsoft Windows XP Professional" /fastdetect

lordgalla,

Look to Group Policy for a possible help. See the last paragraph of faq779-4017 for example.
