I have a machine with windows 2000 service pack 1 installed. After installation of service pack 2 i can't boot in any mode. The only way to solve the problem and boot is to RE-install windows. I need service pack 2 to test beta version of Visual Studio .net. Any ideas??? My motherboard is asus a7-v, the boot disk is connected to the primary ide-66 controller, i have a second disk on the ata-100 controller

Just a tid bit of information guys:

I have the A7V in multiple workstations at a site. We installed W2KPRO SP2 (on disc) without dificulty. When we installed W2KPRO SP1 and upgraded to SP2, we got it to hang. I guess if you were hardcore trying to get to SP2, you could install a fresh copy of W2K and make sure the install disks have Sp2 on them. Just a thought.

I installed SP2 just to test Visual Studio.NET, without SP2 i could not installe it. Anyway i found a workaround: i disabled ALL the IRQ assignments of PCI slots in the BIOS (i have lots of cards there...). Install w2k from scratch, update to SP2 and everything works fine... with no sound card and no net card

Is it possible to do this without installing W2K Server Fresh? I have too much time into this server to justify whiping it out without having to. I found another fix that I need to apply using SP2.

Hi there, I'm also have problems with win2k on a A7V133. It seems to boot 70% of the time but once in a while it will blue screen with the stop code. C0000218. After a re-boot it will work fine. It is a Athlon 1 gig. I noticed that when I switch the SDRAM speed down to 100MHz, from 133MHz it works fine. No blue screens yet.

But then another system with a Gigabyte 7DXR motherboard (AMD chipset)also blue screened with this exact same stop code, and will not boot at all. All these systems had SP2 installed at the very end after all over drivers and programs.

So is this a SP2 problem, or something else.

I'll try re-installing 2k tomorrow without SP2 and see what happens.

I also installed ServicePack2. After it the booting is too slow. I restarted many times the computer untill I tried to wait untill possible. And computer started, but too slow. John Fill

No Cryptospy , they are just to occupied with Intel "world of bugs" and you must admit it's very "large" world.
There could be solution.Does anyone tried to install SP1, then to make ERD flopy, instal SP2, and when it hangs up to start repair process with w2000 boot disks. This procedure in combination with driver, bios and ATA up-to-dates and modifications could work!

Good Luck to all!

Yes, but it restores the system to SP1. Thats the only way I have been able to save my server from the denisons of SP2

No,it should not fully restore system to Sp1(even if you read it somewhere) .Sp1 has about
100mb(i think so) and ERD 1.44.So, there are lot's of files wich loaded sysroot/system,sysroot/system32,sysroot,etc....
It is very hard to answer correct but there are not chances that hole SP2 integration into Windows is based on registry
strings that are related to ERD-SP1 snapshot of system.SPs always has 'bodies' wich phisical presence in system is not
related to registry modifications, they are just simply there in system folders.Maybe there is some small COM or
API utillity in Sp2 wich can help Max70 to run Visual Studio net.
Why not try?

Sorry, I miss understood you.. :( I didn't run off the floppy ERD, I used the Setup CD to re-load w2k back to SP1. My Bad.

Yes there IS a patch for this -
It affects AMD systems Athelon & Duron and shows up after installing SP2. I ran across this this morning... it is actually a registry change that makes everything go back to normal.

Apparently it has to do with the Miniport interrupt for AGP video cards (embedded or otherwise) and I only experienced this problem when I installed SP2 although others have had it since the original W2K install.

Here is the patch location:

Since the url is too long, cut it entirely and paste into your browser.

right from the horse's (er AMD's) mouth

Hope this helps.

Anyone who has the ASUS A7V with ANY via chipsets,
There is a known issue between the VIA chipset and Wink2k which causes this. To fix this you must update your BIOS, do so at the asus site, or if it is down, go here

Upgraded both the motherboard BIOS (to 1005a, which upgraded Promise BIOS to 1.60 build 33) and the Windows 2000 Promise UDMA driver to 1.60 build 33. Tried to download those drivers from the US Asus site (ftp.asus.com), but the US site doesn't appear to be updated as often as the Taiwan site, so I had to
go there for the latest files: ftp://ftp.asus.com.tw/pub/asus/mb/socka/kt133/a7v/ a7v1005a.zip v160b33.zip the BIOS flash utility must be downloaded seperately from: ftp://ftp.asus.com/pub/ASUS/mb/flash/aflash.exe
