Hi There chapps .. only a minor issue but its bugging me,

My laptop running Windows 2k boots fine from being powered off, but when windows does a "re-start" then it hangs on the DELL screen at the begining of bootup, i then have to manualy power off and turn it on again.

I've tried flashing with BIOS with the latest version and still experiencing the issue.

Any ideas?

Thanks in advance,

Rob

History? Ie, has it always done this - if not, when did it start, and any hardware/software changes made around that time?

OK electrofreak, I'll give that a go thanks,

As for a history to this problem i dont really have much.

The laptop was purchased by a client of mine and was second hand, it had a partitioned hard drive one of which being FAT32, at this point we had the reboot issue... i removed the partition and formated the drive with NTFS and installed a clean copy of Windows 2000.

After the first boot i jumped feet fisting into SP4, i'm pretty sure that it re-booted after the SP upgrade it was fine. Since then i have installed all the critical and optional patches and then i noticed the issue again.

This would suggest that it is caused by a windows update (no suprises there)... but which one? ... i really dont know.

Its possible that a windows update caused it but im guessing somewhere along the line as things happen sometimes one of the system files was either corrupted or accidently deleted. I could be wrong but at the moment thats what im thinking. We will know for sure when you report back lol.

The partiton you removed is a Diagnostic FAT Partition, the reason for the Hang at the DELL LOGO screen could be that the BIOS not being able to read it, one of the reasons for the partition is in case the NTFS partition is not bootable you can use a boot disk and other diagnostic checks.
Go into the BIOS and at boot sequence, make the hard drive the first boot, turn any others off, that might work, there maybe a disable feature for the diagnostic in the BIOS.

Good luck
