I know I have some errors on the disk, but I have tried everything and continually receive the error
"Cannot open volume for direct access"
I really need to run chkdsk in the /f /r modes . It may be catch 22 in that the disk errors are creating the inability to open the volume.

I have tried removing drivers that appear to control the disk, changed service start-ups ( the ones I can) , but this is not like DOS, so far in that you can boot to a prompt and then run diagnostic or repair programs. Any suggestions would be very welcome

Well I'm sure you know this already based on what you've described in your troubleshooting process but just to verify the process I've cut/pasted MS Tech net text.
AntiVirus stuff and Remote Control stuff are also things to look at.
Sorry couldn't be more specific.

To have Chkdsk or Autochk lock the partition and perform their appropriate tasks, complete the following steps:
1. Click Start, point to Settings, and then click Control Panel.
2. Double-click the Services icon, and then change the Start Type of the other third-party utility to Manual.
3. Click Start, point to Settings, click Control Panel, and then double-click Devices.
4. Check for third-party devices set to run at startup that might be locking the volume, and if you locate any, double-click the third-party device, and then set its startup type to Disabled.
NOTE: If you are unsure if it is safe to disable the device, create a test hardware profile, and then disable the device in the test hardware If this does not work, revert back to your original profile.
