bogus email recipient not error instantly

i have an exch 5.5, when we send to bogus email address of our local domain, ex : bogus@mydomain.com, the exchange is not replay back automatically as, Your message did not reach some or all of the intended recipients.

instead it was trying, and giving the error to sender after timeout sending

what posibble cause, routing ?
