I remember reading of this one before, but I can't locate
the reference.

I've inherited ( via virus? email?) a file which shows up as a square box ( instead of a file name),of zero bytes.
I forget the ascii character code.

I've been unable to delete it ( i think i tried rebooting to DOS only) & fiddling with attributes.

it's not causing a serious drama, just stops "avg anti virus", when the logical D drive is checked.

I use D: for backups etc / burning / ..

Any fixes?
I hope without reformatting the hard disk

This is the time unix-like utility such as "rm" command does the trick. You should be able download unix-like utilities from zddownload.com or get the "mkstool kit", install it, and run the following command:

rm -i *

in the directory that have the weird characters. Once you have deleted the files that you want to delete, press CTRL-C to quit out.

Note: Run the command in DOS windows. "-i" stands for interactive.

Good luck.

iandoreeninvan: well, I tried posting an email address for you to email to so that I could send you a free registration key for the product to see if it works for you. The post was rejected.

Look around my site and find an email link to Customer Service and email it, or figure out the address of "custserv at my domain".

Peace!

Another update [ in the continuing saga]

thanks for all suggestions

1. linney. jul 29

hd is a
Seagate Barracuda 7200.7 , 40 GB (ST340014A) Hard Drive

I'll look for a utility like the one suggested.

The last time i remember hex editing a file on disk was to
try to recover a database file that had been corrupted.
sectors : offsets etc. - in dos approx 2.#

and the other site mentioned.
downloaded diskinv. will try it later ( off!net!)

2. bcastner jul 29.

My WinXp Pro behaves a little differently, than
that described in

when i right-click on folder name,
i get "sharing and security"
& when i click "properties"

Both give Foldername Properties with 3 tabs
General
Sharing
customise ...
use this folder as a template ... etc

Tried 308421 - taking ownerships
worked a little different to that described
[ i think due to 'domain' considerations ] but set
permissions - Full etc.. ]

Also worked thru 307874...

i dont get a "performance and Maintenance" option ? icon in control panel

in control panel - i get icons for "administrative Tools"
then icons for "computer management","performance", Services

tried fsutil, couldn't get to work.
ran under ... command.
got behavior as one of the options...
& invalid parameter etc.
i'll try again off! net!

oops! sorry dunnno ( i don't know ) what happened.
but i didn't receive an email [ or perhaps i confused your email with spam/ virus & bounced it using mailwasher ].

Or maybe i thought it was just the 'tecktips' list advising that someone had replied ( ie to the list ).

thanks again & I will have a look at your site [ after
posting this]

the optusnet email address is my 'real one'.

unix-like rm utility
unix-like rm utilities
unix like rm command

couldn't find an appropriate rm utility.

i only had one brief contact with unix.
half day course ' unix .. cobol... on burroughs mainframes i think in 1980's.

i thought it much like dos, & i might learn it if i
had to use it one day....
