i tried to resinstall windows 95, i thought everything was good, the wizard took me thru all the steps, but when the computer shuts down and restarts, i get all the normal window start up things, but right before the whole program loads i get one of those blue screens that says there is a fatal application and it shuts down. i know it is a pretty vague question, just wondering if this sounds familiar to anyone.
thanks

Try forcing it to boot in Safe Mode.

My guess is there is probably a device or .dll file that is conflicting in the system...

If it comes up in Safe Mode, click on START, go to RUN and type MSCONFIG in the box to run the MSCONFIG utility... Choose Selective Startup and disable the System.ini and Win.inin from running on boot. Shut down and restart... If the system now boots, you'll need to go back into msconfig. Turn on the System.ini during boot and reboot again... If it comes up again then the problem is in the Win.ini... Go to the Win.ini tab and start turning on the commands 5 lines at a time, rebooting each tim until you can pinpoint which one is causing the problem... If the machine doesn't boot when youreactivate the System.ini, then the problem is likely in there. Turn on the Win.ini during boot and disable the System.ini to be sure, and, if verified, got to the System.ini tab and start going through that...

If none of that helps it, boot in Safe Mode, go to the device manager, and start by disabling all devices that aren't crucial to your system booting, then reboot and see if it comes up.... If so, start enabling each device one by one until you can figure out which one is causing the problem...

i now have windows 95 loaded, but none of my settings carried over. my monitor only has the option for 16 colors, and it is not seeing my modem at all.

Drivers.....

Most likely it installed a default VGA driver for your video, and may have instaleld a "Standard Modem" or quite possibly, none at all.

You'll need to install the drivers for your video card and your modem.

If you don't know what you have off the top of your head, pull the case and look on the video card / modem card. The manufacturer name is usually printed on there... If not, they usually at least have model numbers on there... A search on Google is bound to turn up the proper driver.

Install those two drivers and you should be good to go...
