Blue sceen on reinstall

I'm trying to do a repair install of ME. First it blue screened with a Windows Protection error - system halted. Now when I reinstall again, at the first reboot it says setup us updating your files, please wait. After about half an hour it says Windows could not upgrade the file %1 from %2 over and over again, then it will boot into Safe mode, but blue screens again when I try to boot into regular mode. I've done a thorough scandisk and fdisk /mbr. Still no joy. Any ideas other than formatting?

I work for Gateway and I see that "%1 from %2" error ALL the time.

When that happens, I usually copy cabs and it works fine.

You seem to be pretty pc savy since you fdisk /mbr so, try this.


Inserted Windows ME CD
Reboot system.
Booted from CD
Go into DOS.
Type FORMAT C: /Q <enter>
Format drive.
Restart the computer
Booted from CD
Went into DOS.
Switch from D: to C:
Type: MD WINDOWS <enter>
Type: CD WINDOWS <enter>
C:\Windows>
Type: MD CABS <enter>
Type: CD CABS <enter>
C:\Windows\Cabs>
Switch to D:\
Type: CD WIN9X <enter>
*(Might be "CD WINME" on some cd's)*
Type: Copy *.* C: <enter>
*Depending on the cd, X' amount of files copied*
Switch back to C:
Type: SETUP <enter>

Once you do that, it should start you up on the WindowsME installation.

You shouldn't encounter that 1% to 2% problem then.

I know how to do it if I format the drive. I was looking for a solution that does not involve formatting.

Have you tried disconnecting 'unnecessary' hardware like sound/modem/network cards (or turning off in bios) while you do the install?

Also - are you doing this because of a problem - you may have bad hardware?

Yes, I removed everthing except the video card, but thanks for the suggestion. Went ahead and backed up the data nad formatted the drive and reinstalled. Now all is well.
