In my versions of quark (5, 6.1 & 6.5), I'm having no luck setting up bleeds. If I do a dummy page with, say a part of an image running on to the pasteboard, then go to FILE...Page Setup...Bleed, all the boxes are greyed out. Any clues? (I normally have "Custom Bleeds Xtension" enabled).

...what printer do you have set up in your print centre?

andrew

Try Utilities--Xtensions Manager and see if indeed Custom Bleeds are still enabled. Also be sure in PageSetup--Bleed that you're not set to "Page Items".
If that isn't the fix, I'd close Quark and trash the Preference file.

Yes, apepp, I switched from my normal printer to "Adobe PDF" and the Bleed function "came alive" but does this mean i have to convert projects to PDFs in future?

...no...

...you can still create postcript files using this driver, you should find an option to print to file rather than a printer...

...are you printing to a desktop printer? your PPD will need to change if it is not allowing you to set bleeds, it is the PPD file selected in the drop down menu that determines what settings you can adjust to...

are you on mac 9 or X or Windows?

Andrew

...i would check your your printer setup (control panels on windows or print setup on mac) see what PPD it is using and change it to something else and give it a test...

...or delete the existing one and create another printer, change the PPD as mentioned and give it another go...

...quit Quark and restart it so it can see the new printer created...

...the adobe pdf printer will normally create pdf files using acrobat distiller in the background after printing, sounds to me like you have this installed somewhere...

...to print to your desktop device, you will need to create a printer with a PPD that will allow bleeds. You may find that text prints better from PDF files to desktop printers such as inkjets, handy to know...
