Hi,

I know this is a bit off topic, but I’ve been around the houses looking for someone who knows about this and can’t find anyone, was rather hoping that someone here might be able to help. I just want to check that I’ve understood the bittorrent choking mechanism properly.

Here’s how I understand it:

When it receives download requests from other bittorrent peers, a bittorrent program looks at the upload speed of each peer. The program will share with those peers offering the fastest upload speeds. And of those peers, the program will offer the most bandwidth to those offering it the most bandwidth. However, even when it stops uploading to a peer completely (choking), your bittorrent program will continue to download from that peer for as long as it can (until the other peer chokes it).

I know there’s more to it than this, but I just wanted to check that whether I’ve got it right. I’ve been reading about this all weekend and my head’s buzzing, judgement completely gone.

Would be really grateful if anyone could advise.

Thanks
