Bitmap graphic not showing properly

I have a report that utilizes a bitmap graphic (.bmp) and has been displaying properly for years. Recently, we tried (unsuccessfully) to install some scanning software on a particular machine and now when the report is run the graphic shows up as a miniature of the size it is meant to show as, it is fuzzy, and the name of the file (logo01.bmp) shows up underneath it. We believe this is somehow related to our unsuccessful attempt at installing the scanning software, but we may be wrong. Any thoughts on this ?

I think the scanning software set itself up as the owner of BMP files. Open Windows explorer, find a BMP, right click on it and choose Open With. From the list that appears, choose the appropriate application (maybe, Microsoft Paint) and make sure to check the "Always use this application" checkbox before clicking okay. That should fix it.

I tried your idea without success.

What I have noticed is that when I right click on the BMP file and select properties I see that the OPEN WITH is set to WINDOWS PICTURE AND FAX VIEWER ... and when I click on CHANGE ... the highlighted option is PHOTO-DELUXE Something or other ...

On a machine where everything works properly, when I click on CHANGE ... the highlighted option is WINDOWS PICTURE AND FAX VIEWER.

I have tried to correct that difference by changing it and applying it ... but it keeps going back to the PHOTO-DELUXE blah blah blah ...

So, I think I am on the right track but something is overriding my efforts.

Any other thoughts ?

Is your graphic saved in a general field in a file, or are you displaying it as a reference to a file, either from a memo field, or hard-coded to the report form? I have run into something like this once before as well... your answer to this question may jog my memory to how I fixed it... (And I do remember it was fixed.)

I am also getting almost the same behavior on one of my reports that has been working for years. Now, three out of four users can print the report with the bitmap just fine to their own printer or to a network printer. The fourth user gets a black box on their local printer and white space on the network printer. The bitmap file location is hard coded on the report. I tried to reset the default "Open With" program, but it didn't help. I'm thinking maybe something "dinged" the FoxPro run time files or printer driver files. They insist they did not try to install any software. Does anybody have any thoughts as to the source of this problem?

For both of you with this problem, what happens when you double-click on a BMP file on the problem machines?

In my case it opens with Paint! I'm thinking about re-installing the FoxPro run time files.

Now the client has installed a color printer. The bitmap prints, but with a border line around the bitmap. Is this a FoxPro (6.0) problem, or is there something in the bitmap file that should be changed? The bitmap is a file and is set to transparent on the report.

I think it's probably the bitmap, but you can check that with Paint.

I don't see any border lines in the bitmap, any other ideas? I have "scale picture, reatain shape" checked, and "Fixed relative to top of band" checked on the picture control in the report, and the bitmap is a file name (always the same file, it is a company logo). I am going to try different bitmaps to see if they all print the same way.

Tried a different bitmap and it worked fine, but i don't see any obvious visible differences in Paint. Still a mystery as to why other users can print the report without any border lines, etc. Will re-install run time files on next visit.

Response to .....For both of you with this problem, what happens when you double-click on a BMP file on the problem machines?


Answer: The Windows Picture and Fax Viewer opens and displays the bitmap. The only difference between the computer on which things work properly and the one for which it is fouled up ... is that the computer with the problem displays the graphic much larger than on the other computer. I believe this is a personal preference by the user of that computer.
