I have a compaq presario 700 notebook running winxp, haven't used it in a couple of months but when I went to boot it it came up with cmos has no date and needed to be set and it said cmos checksum error after settig the dates in the bios it booted up normally but after setting for a couple of days and trying to boot it up it came up with the same error,my main battery is bad and doesn't hold a charge at all, Is this a sign of a dead motherboard battery?

Most likely the cmos battery has died. You can try to replace it yourself but I would suggest taking it to be replaced unless you are keen to removing 20+ screws and removing the keyboard.

Notebook computers can be tricky to take apart. Maybe there is a small panel on the back where the battery is. These protable computers are all proprietary so be careful. If you take it apart you may be voiding a warranty.
