Best way to setup laptop for home/business use? 1

I have a laptop that I'd like to use at home and on my company's LAN and I'm not sure of the best way to configure it (network rights at work is not an issue).I will NOT be trying to access my network via RAS. I merely want to use the same laptop at home (for personal) and at work (for business).

At home, I would like to use my dial-up Internet connection whereas at work I would like to obviously access the Internet through my company''s gateway.

Should I create two different user profiles? One, a local profile that I use at home, the other a network profile for work? I could then configure the local profile to dial-out whereas my network profile can be configured to use TCP\IP.

I would appreciate any help that you can give. I know that this is a very common scenario, however I've never had the need to use a laptop in both places before.

Is it a domain environment at work? - if so, you will need a local user profile for use at home.
Are you connecting to a network at home? - if not, then you should be ok with just a local profile for home.

If you do connect at home then you have the complication of 2 network configurations (commonly workgroup at home and domain at work). You can only belong to one at a time. This can be a problem if you join your home workgroup but do not have a domain user id with sufficient privileges to rejoin the domain at work (you'll need to get someone who has to do it).

I cheated and use a dual-boot with Win98SE on a peer-to-peer network at home and Win2000 on a server/domain based network.

I think I may have run into this problem. I was trying to connect my laptop to my home network tonight. My laptop is running Win 2000 professional. It is currently configured to a domain at work. I changed the "Network ID" settings on the laptop to use my home workgroup. When I rebooted I am prompted for a user name and password and my former password is not working. Also the login dialog box doesn't allow me to select a domain so I assume it's trying to log into the workgroup, but I have no username and password setup for the workgroup! So now I'm stuck since I can't get into my laptop at all now! :-( Can anyone offer me some help? Thanks )

If u are using windows NT or 2000 & have admin rights then i dont think u shud have any problem in logging at home & work place can u be specific that what problem are u facing...

For instance if u r logging on to a domain at ur work place & when u try to login at ur home u can always create a dialup & hook on to internet & in case u hava a VPN id through which u want to connect to companies network then u can use same login which u use at your work place. It wont be a problem....
