I have a single PIX 515e running 6.3(4). When I attempt to capture my configuration so that I have a backup copy, it is too cryptic to make a sense of. What's the best way to backup (and be able to restore) my PIX config. on a monthly basis?

Currently I am attached to my PIX via the console port and using HyperTerminal.

You can try the tftp method. (Hard to edit it but does a complete job.)

copy flash tftp - it will prompt you for input of server and file
To restore
copy tftp flash

This will grab the cert if you have one for SSH. Copying the text from term window will not, but you can always create them. Copying the text has the advantage that it is easier to edit and upload a new config.

I use:

write net tftp-ipaddress:backupfilename.txt

I run this every time I make chages so that I have a back up.

you can edit this file easily with notepad.

and I have restored configs to replacement pix from these files without any problem.

Odd, I always have weird formatting errors with tftp. I find the text method easier to manipulate. c'est la vie.
