I have been helping some people out lately with cleaning up their computers and making them faster but I was wondering if there are any programs out there that can benchmark the computer for overall performance before the cleaning process starts and again when it is done to show the results of cleaning the computer. I dont have much experience with these types of software and there are a tonne out there so any advise you have would be great.

It depends what you're trying to benchmark and what you're cleaning up.

I think it's probably a good idea to let us know what it is that you're actually doing so that we have a better idea of what you want to benchmark.

The real world is not about exam scores, it's about ability.

Usually I clean up spy ware, virus scan, MS updates, removed unused old programs, clean registry, limit start up programs, limit some unneeded services from starting automatically, clean up the HD, install more RAM if needed, update drivers. basically stuff that a user should be doing but some people don't understand how.

I have never worried too much about a program like you describe, one that on a slightly fragmented or having little malware will show you that you have improved the efficiency by one or two seconds.

In severe cases where malware or defragmentation is a problem the user should easily notice the performance gains just from working on the machine.
