thread481-883705 discusses this very issue, except that while I have completely recreated the selection list, doing so only fixed the problem for one day.

Veritas' (Symantec's) answer to this problem is to take out the object in the selection set that no longer exists... Except that the folder it is failing on never existed, nor should it have since like one of the respondants in the past, the path has two consecutive backslashes.

If anyone has an answer for this situation, I would greatly appreciate it since it is driving my customer nuts!

switch to text view and check if it appears there, if so highlight it and delete it.

-------------------------------

If it doesn't leak oil it must be empty!!

I've been all through the text view.

The bogus selection has never been visible in any selection list view, graphical or text.

The object it choked on today was:
\Userdata\\ Grp RJanuary 13, 2006.xls

There's nothing like that explicitly in the selection list

Can you post the error message from the log.

-------------------------------

If it doesn't leak oil it must be empty!!

Backup - E: Data VolumeDirectory not found. Can not backup directory \Userdata\\ Grp RJanuary 13, 2006.xls and its subdirectories.

A directory with no name, and an apparent filename starting with a space. That's about as bogus as you can get.

I'm really close to reinstalling BENT, but I can't convince myself that doing so would do any good.

Have your run a chkdisk on the volume to see if anything is wrong on the volume?

Very good question indeed. I did a defrag, but I haven't done a chkdisk.

I'll schedule one for tonight!

Sometimes we miss the most obvious things! I'll let you know if that makes a difference.

Well I would probably run a chkdisk and if it finds anything re-create the selection list again.

I didn't try to recreate the selection list last night after the chkdisk and reboot, but the error received is exactly the same as yesterday.

I'll redo the selections, and try it again.

The only other thing I can think if is place the remote agent in debug and let the job run and then look at the debug logs.

Another option would be to run filemon on the volume with the error during the backup and see whats is happening. filemon log may be a lot to look thru but it may help you out

Well, we had a successful run over the weekend. After running the chkdisk, I recreated the selection list from scratch.

I'll post an update in a couple of days if all goes well.

JB

Knock on wood, the customer has had successful backups every night since the check disk and the selection was recreated.

Thanks for the input all!
