Our phone system is a bcm50. An employee has retired and I want to move my extension to their phone but am having trouble programming the change. Through feature 983 I tried to change the mailbox to my # and it isn't working. It is only taking calls from the retired extension. Please help.

You make no sense as to what you are trying to accomplish I'm afraid.
It does sound like you may need to call your local telephone tech in for a MAC order.....and perhaps some training.

The simplest way to change the extension is to move the station jumpers at the control unit. If that is not something you know how to do I'd follow curly's suggestion to hire a tech.

You guys over-think your responses like true analysts. Sure the question could've used a little more detail but it turned out to be quite easy after a quick read of the BCM50 Telephone set guide:
How to change the extension of a user who first exchanges her phone with that of a former employees because his is cleaner.
Feature - **config (spell config using 1 through 9 keypad on set)
enter log username
enter log user password
Use program buttons along the right of the T7316E to enter Telephone and Sets, find the extension and select it, scroll down to Change name and use 1 through 9 keypad to enter new name. (not perfect but close to what I typed, easy to figure out as you try it for yourself.
Going to put BCM50 on the network one day to attempt a change via a browser.

Your right....was not enough details, now I see you just wanted to swap sets because one is better/cleaner.
Your instruction title above is off, it relates to how to make a name change at a DN/EXT and not how to change a DN/EXT.
If you want to remain in same office with the same ext but swap sets because on is better is some way and not have to do any programming changes:
Turn Set relocation OFF, swap phones, done!
If you want to move offices and swap a phone as well and again keep your ext/dn:
Turn Set Relocation ON, swap phones, turn Se Relocation back Off and swap sets again.
If you want to change your ext number to that of another and don't care that everyone may still ask or call your old ext:
Do a Change DN. (enter old DN, Enter new DN)
Do a name change
Change voice mail programming as well.
