(windows 2000) - I need to be able to run a batch that will run without anyone having to log on to the machine ie at machine bootup.

How would I go about doing this, would I use group policy ?

Check out Scheduled Tasks in Control Panel. You can use it to schedule bat and exe files to run at system startup or on a regular schedule. You can also specify which user account each file will run under.
