Hi...I am new to all of this and have some pretty basic questions. I am attempting to set up a small domain with one controller running 2000 server and three workstations running XP Professional. I have set up the domain controller and have attempted to add computers and users. I think that I have been successful in adding the computers using Active Directory on the DC, but I have not been able to join the domain from any of the XP machines. Again this is a small domain. The only other component is a HP laserJet 5000. Any advice with be appreciated. I have attempted to read through the 2000 server booklet several times as well as worked my way through the "Help" applet, but I have had no luck. Oh yeah, one more thing, I just want to use the server as a file-server that all three workstations can access to read and write files. Again, thanks in advance.

When you try to add the workstations to the Domain, do you get any sort of error response?

Have you set the server up to be an AD domain controller? With only 3 workstations, it would work equally well as a workgroup server

It appears as if it finds the domain, but when I attempt to enter the user and password (for a user that I set up on the DC), it hangs for about 5 secs and then says something about not having access. I don't know the exact message right now because I'm not in front of the machine, but I will check today and post this afternoon. I had originally set it up as a workgroup server but then I was reading about all of the benefits for a domain server. I thought it would be easier to organize everything since there would be a good deal of users on this small setup. But again, I'm looking for all the advice I can get...so maybe it would be better for me to run it as a workgroup server. Thanks for your help.
