Ok ive been asked to setup some new switches for our network and I have no clue about them. Browsing through the manual its a minefield. All i want to be able to do is configure the switch so we can put monthly bandwidth limits on each port and use the web interface. I dont need no special vlans or anything like that all the machines plugged in will be on the same lan.

I connected to the terminal and ran the basic setup - once i had assigned and IP and reset the switch the lights of the plugged in cables went out and wont come back on!

so i used the write erase command to clear the switch and this reset it but not the vlan information (lights still out)

i then found this from cisco

delete flash:vlan.dat
Delete filename [vlan.dat]?
!−− Press Enter.
Delete flash:vlan.dat? [confirm]ySwitch#Switch#reloadProceed with reload? [confirm]y4w5d: %SYS−5−RELOAD: Reload requested

I did this but the only problem is I pressed Y at the first prompt and now when i try it again dir flash:

Directory of flash:/

2 -rwx 2774747 Mar 01 1993 00:03:28 c2950-i6q4l2-mz.121-12c.EA1.bin

22 -rwx 110 Mar 01 1993 00:04:19 info.ver

7741440 bytes total (3247616 bytes free)

the vlan.dat is missing!

So in a nutshell

how do i get my lights back on like in factory fresh mode and can anyonegive me a quick guide on how to setup my 2950 for the purpose i need ?

Please help!

When you erase the configuration the vlan database info needs that command: delete flash:vlan.dat to erase the vlan info. You haven't really done any harm. If you do a show vlan all the interfaces should be in vlan 1. You will need to start again but I think you wanted that.

Thanks mate.

I have deleted the config but how come all the lights are still out on my switch?

also has anyone got an idea how to help with the basic setup that I require?
