Hav you tried just sharing the files and folders on each system?
Are all of your PC's, Laptops attached to the router? If they are then you only need to enable file sharing.
On the PC or Laptop, open up explorer with the following procedure:-
1: Right click on the start bar
2: Left click on explorer
Thsi opens explorer. Then , on the left hand side of the explorer window right click on the C drive and left click on sharing.
Creat a new share and allow full access (this is the simplest solution but not very secure). You will have to decide which files and drives you want to share.
Once this has been completed you should be able to browse to the PC and files required.
Reamin positive. The affect on those around you will amaze.

If your router assigned the IP address (via DHCP), then they should all be on the same network. Your router is probably handing out addresses on the 192.168.1.x subnet. In this case your router will be 192.168.1.1 and other machines on your network can be 192.168.1.2 thru 192.168.1.254.
Can you see the other PC's via Network Neighborhood?

Can you ping the other PC's?
Open a Command prompt window.
Type - ipconfig
press enter
This will show you the IP address of the system you are on.
Go to another PC and then ping this address and see if you get a response. If you do then you may have a DNS issue or netBIOS depending on the type of system you are using.

Does your IP address start with 192.168.1.x on all of your machines?
If so, you are using Internal Private IP Addressing and you can safely post those IP addresses here so that we can help you.
If you find your addresses are Interanl, post the IP addreses of each machine.
Also, if your IP addresses start with 169.254.x.x, let us know that as well as this means your machines are not reaching a DHCP server. And this is another problem all together.
Hang in there, this is easily solvable.

Correction, 192.168.x.x starts the Class C Internal Private IP address range. So if your machines have 192.168.x.x as their IP address, (where x is any number). Then you can post them here safely.

Those 2 addresses are on the same subnet.

Not necesarily. There could be a few different reasons that your Desktop PC is not accepting ping packets.

Have you tried turning it off? I personally had all kinds of file sharing problems when my XP firewall was enabled.
When you say the option for File Sharing is disable....Where are you looking at this option?

Just a quick note on this one......
Having had various problems with SP2 on XP I have taken a lot of machines back to SP1.
Once MS sort out the issues (I dont hold my breath) then I may put SP2 back on.

I dont receive any errors when i open the network places. I disabled some services to speed up my comp.
