Can someone explain or point me to a website that describes basic call routing? What I need to know (or reinforce)is the path a call takes from a DID that starts with 630-236, how that call would go to a number in Chicago and also anywhere else outside of our LATA (which is 358).

One other question: can a call that is "local" -- as in, inside the same LATA, be routed to a different trunk so that it can be billed as long distance at a lower rate? I'm pretty convinced that it cannot, but a colleague of mine says if we route it out of a different trunk all calls 15 miles and over can be charged at the LD rate rather than the local 15-over mile toll.

You need to explain a little more. When you say DID are you talking about you site, or the number you are trying to dial.

From inside of you local system, you setup ASR tables to tell how you want a call to route based of Area Code, or full numbers etc. The that tables tells the system what route pattern to use. The route pattens tell the system which trunks to use.

As far as you last question, you would have to talk with your provider of your T-1 on how they bill.
