I just had a Toshiba laptop stop booting up today. Each time the laptop is started, it fails to boot and the screen reads:
***Bad RTC battery***
***Bad check sum (CMOS) ***
Check system then press F1.

I am assuming that the RTC battery went bad and hopefully replacing it will fix the problem. Anyone know how easy this is on the Toshiba 6100? Instructions or tips would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

I don’t know for sure about the Toshiba 6100, but the Toshiba model that I owned had a coin type battery holder located on the bottom of the laptop under the sticker with all the data-nomenclature. I had to peel back the sticker exposing the coin battery holder. There is a round cover (part with a slot in it) that you will have to turn approximately one-quarter turn clockwise, or counter clockwise in order to access the battery. You can use a screwdriver or a coin to turn the cover. You may have to use a small screwdriver to pry the cover up after you make the turn -the cover was tight on mine and this is what I had to do. The coin battery will probably be something like model CR2032 and will be held in the battery holder with side clips. You will need to push the clip over away from the side of the battery in order to release the battery from the holder. On different models of laptop the battery are in different locations. Some have covers that are screwed on, or held in place by up to four screws. We suggest that you go to the Toshiba web site and search for data/ owner manual information. The battery replacement is normally not too difficult and is straightforward. You simply install the new battery, restart (Boot up) the laptop, press F1 and reset the bios (CMOS) information.

Hi Guys,
I have seen this issue in about three different posts related to the same symptoms and brand of laptop.
I think it may be useful to get together and report these issues to toshiba as it may be a standard issue and something they need to know about.
