How do you backup an entire laptop onto a cd

You can't. Windows alone will be too large for a single CD. Also, a simple file backup, will not be sufficient to do a full restore, say onto a new hard disk. You need a complete image, which means something like Symantec Ghost. Depending on how much stuff is on the sytem you may be able to burn the Ghost image onto a single DVD.

My hard drive is only 40gigs would that fit on a dvd

In a word - no. Imaging utilities such as Ghost or my personal favourite...Acronis TrueImage can split the image so it can be copied onto removable media, such as dvd, you set this up in the options before you create the image. From my experience with Acronis it generally compresses the image to about 50% of actual size. If you have 40Gb to backup, (or is that just the size of your drive?), it will probably need 5 dvd's once compressed.

Daniel.

Ignore that. Wrong Thread, tabbed browsing gets confusing sometimes :)
