Backup without agents???

I am in the process of upgrading/switching out backup software and was wondering if anyone knew of any software that does not require me to buy all of these remote agents for my servers.

It seems a little ridiculous that I have to get multiple licenses and open agents for my servers.

Any suggestions would be much appreciated.

Here's one way to look at the issue of remote licenses. You and I each by a full license for Backup Exec. Since there is only one price for the license, we pay the same amount. Let's say you are responsible for 10 computers/servers. I am responsible for 150 computers/servers. If remote agents/licenses aren't required, then isn't it unfair to you that we paid the same amount but I am using mine on 140 more computers/servers than you?

It's also an issue with the company (such as Veritas), how can they ensure that you are only backing up your computers? I work in a building with other companies. I could use my backup system and single license to back up all their computers. I could charge them a small fee that would be less than what they would pay Veritas. Is that fair? Even if I did it for free, I am taking money from Veritas and other backup software companies.

Bottom line is: buying remote agents is a lot less expensive than buying a full license and backup hardware for each system.

HP Data Protector does not have a remote agent license for a plain file backup, but you have to get licenses for online backup of databases (ie Exchange, SQL, Oracle, DB2 etc).
