backup to remote server

hi

i'm trying to create a new transaction log backup to a remote server in sql server 7 but i cant seem to get it to recognise the remote server - what i am doing is going to the standard file location window and typing in \\servername\foldername but it's coming up as c:\\\servername\foldername. does anyone have any clue whats going on here or how to correctly set up a remote backup?
