I think my backup tapes have seen better days. Is there any information about how long tapes should last before you need to replace them.

If you are using them EVERY DAY, they may start to exhibit problems after a year or so.
Otherwise, as long as they are stored in a proper manner, they last a "computer" lifetime.
I have found that Travan tapes are usually good for a year of occasional writing - every day, 6-9 months, sometimes a year -- now an explanation...
I'm not trying to step on DaveGoTech's toes, but the above is what I tell my clients, because your tape backup can save your life and sanity one day. Travan tapes are relatively inexpensive and if you have a drive crash you are going to want a good backup. I have seen people use travan tapes every day for well over a year and still get good backups.

My suggestion is, you should be checking your backups physically by restoring a particular file to ensure you got a good backup at least every couple of weeks, I recommend after six months of writing the same tape every day, start checking it for a good backup more often. In reality, you should have 1 tape for each day of the week and rotate them, this way you can last well over a year with a set of tapes.
Backups are the most important thing you can have in your recovery arsenal and it will DEFINATELY save your life and sanity one day.
Another key in tape life is cleaning your tape drive at least once a week.

Hi.

I´m having a very bad time trying to find a drivers for my 3.2 Giga Parallel Port Travan 3 Drive (Imation). I just cant find the software for Win 98. I´ve lost some information that i have backed up but cant restore it because of the drivers. The original drivers where made by Computer Associates, but i went on to their webpage and found nothing. Help Please.. This is my first time in the forum by the way...

Thanks
