Greetings all. I've been using Win2000 server's built-in backup software since installation, with a Seagate drive and Travan NS-20 tapes. I find I can no longer fit the whole server on one tape and have had to reduce the backup to data only. I'd prefer to have the whole server on one tape. Question: Does the built-in backup compress data? It's not clear whether or not it does. If not, what recommendations are there for an external product that doesn't cost and arm and a leg?

Backup software recommendations

The built-in backup has the option to tell your hardware to compress data. When setting up your back-up, there should have been an option to Use Hardware Compression, if available. Your drive probably supports it. To find out if you're using it (I'm assuming jobs have already been scheduled), open the job on the Schedule Jobs tab, click properties and look for /hc
n or /hcff. /hcn means hardware compression is on, and off is off, pretty straightforward. Those tapes are 20GB compressed, 10GB uncompressed, but I generally find that compression ratios aren't always that good. I generally count on about a 1.75:1 compression ratio (results may vary).
If you're trying to back up more data than that, or if you're going to be likely to sometime in the future, I'd suggest a hardware solution rather than different software. A DDS-4 drive will give you twice the backup storage you have now, and probably be faster. Those are generally around $1000 for a good drive - personally, I've had good luck with the Seagate scorpion series. That will also require you to get a SCSI adapter if you don't already have one.
