We are running W2K Server and are using the built in backup program. I have scheduled backups to run on Monday through Friday. I have been assuming that everything was running OK until I had to get a file from the backup tape. When I tried to restore a file I get the following message:

A media with an unrecognized format has been detected. This media contains information generated by some other program and cannot be used by Backup until it has been prepared. Do you want to prepare the media now?

Waring: Preparing this media will destroy all information currently recorded on it!

Any suggestions would be greatly apprecieated.

Have you tried using a back up tape that you no longer need? If possible, See what kind of message you get when you prepare the media. -Brad

I might be wrong but I thought you had to pre-format tapes in MS Backup as it didn't do it as part of the job? We use ARCserve here and it formats/initialises the tapes at the start of the job.

Mind you if it couldn't write to the tape because it wasn't formatted I would have thought it would have flagged an error when the job ran.

I've seen this problem before. Try disabling wide negotiation in the SCSI host BIOS. Not sure if this applies to you but it's worth a shot. -Brad

Problem is due to ms backup not formating tapes that are part of a rotation cycle. Because you are using a cut down version of veritas backup exec you do not have the option to configure all of the backup rotation options....

You have to either format the tape manualy before you do the backup or use the old style AT command or task scheduler to run format.exe before your backup starts.

Best solution though is to by the full version of the software as it is only a cut down freebie from the boys in blue.
