This will probably take a call to Dell Tech Support to help resolve but heres what is going on:

- Windows 2003 Standard Edition - approx 415 GB in RAID 5
- Retrospect by Dantz 6.5 for backup software
- Seagate DAT 36/72 Tape drive
- Dell Poweredge ______ server (don't recall the model number and I'm at home).

Diagnostics on the tape drive and Retrospect report compression enabled on the drive and thus it is not going to do software compression. However backups do not get compressed.

Dell provided a utility called TapeRx on the CD with the drivers and I tried doing a diagnostic run --- 36 GB or less no problem, over 36GB the write process works fine, but the read process fails with hardware compression.

I can turn hardware compression of and do fine with software compression but my question is what would stop the hardware compression from working like it should?
