Backup on DVD question

Hi all,

I want to backup my tar files on DVD-R on a redhat 8 server.

I found a couple of programs, but needed to get a code from the author to get it to work for DVD, which I never manage to get.

I tried cdrecord and mkisofs but don't find the right versions that works on DVD's...

I am willing to buy software, does not need to be free/open-source.

Does anybody here have the know-how to make this work on linux(redhat).

In addition to cdrecord, you will also need to get cdrecord-ProDVD package. Its this package that lets cdrecord burn DVDs. You might also want to find the dvdrtools-0.1.5 package. This one has a mkisofs for DVDs.

I have tried cdrecord-ProDVD package before, but if I remember corectly, I needed a key from the author that I never got a hold of.

I will try your suggestions in the next few days and report back

With the latest package, you can generate a key by typing the command: prodvd key

Make sure you configure your ProDVD config file in your home folder called .prodvd or .prodvd.conf first, before you generate your key. This key will expire around 31 August 2004.

Did you manage to get a key for commecial use, it seem complicated to get a key!

I don't want to install a software on a business server for backup purposes that will stop working in 2 months!

It says that I still need cdrecord, so I'm still stuck with the key problem...

This is getting more complicated than I hoped for... I don't understand why there's not an open source package to write DVD-R on linux!

It should be so simple! I am getting old I think!!!

It is simple if you read my post. Anyway, just to make sure you didn't miss anything:

01. Must have RedHat and Gnome/KDE installed
02. Get following packages/sources and install:
- cdrecord
- cdrecord-ProDVD
- dvdrtools
- xcdroast
03. Get SCSI emulation going for your drive if its IDE.
04. Run xcdroast as root for the first time and setup all your devices.
05. Run the command prodvd in a terminal. This will create the .prodvd.conf file.
06. Edit the .prodvd.conf file and fill in the 2 parameters
- device=
- speed=
whith whatever your drive is configured as.
07. Run the command prodvd key in a terminal. This will display a fully functional key that will expire at the end of August.
08. Go back into xcdroast setup and paste key obtained in setp 07.
09. Burn DVDs

DVD+RW requires the non commercial version of cdrecord, not the version requiring use of a key.
