Backup of public folders EXTREMELY slow over WAN

I hope you can help someone

I have two Exchange 2003 servers connecting via a 2mb SDSL WAN link. They are working perfectly fine except when it comes to.

Backup of the shared public folders is taking hours, i have one running right now and it has taken 55 minutr
es to backup 8Mb. I know it is not the VPN link thats slow because i can transfer files easily and quickly.

Any ideas?

It it on Windows 2003 SP1?

No anti-virus checking the folders.
And yes it is on 2003 SP1, since the post i have noticed it is only slow when you do a public folders backup and quick when it does a public information store backup. If that is any help
