I am running 2000 server. I have an HP SureStore DAT40
I am using the Windows based backup utility and have scheduled the backup task in task schedlr. It is set to run on Sunday morning at 3:00 but has yet to run the backup. Anyone else have this problem. I have also run into this problem in WKST 2000 backing up to a network drive. I get no errors. It just doesn't seem to be doing anything.
Can anyone help?

I am having a problem very similar to this. It seems to run fine on a new tape but once the tape has been used it doesn't overwrite the data. I would be interested in any solutions that you find. Thanks, Daren

For the first problem, not running the backup as scheduled with no apparent errors noted, the problem may be that the backup job is taking long enough to "wake up" and look at the backup device that the job times out and quietly retreats. Three potential solutions for that (you can try any or all of them) are making backup.exe a service (via the Resource Kit); setting up a "check the tape" job that runs 5 minutes prior to the real backup job; and/or taking the backup job executable out of the Scheduler and pasting it into a batch file which then gets scheduled as a job. Check out which talks about it and goes into detail on these solutions and others.

For the second problem, check the link, but also, the backup job may still have the tape specified as "New Media". After the tape gets labelled by the backup job (say, "Monday2") it's not New Media anymore and the backup job thinks it has the wrong tape. My solution has been to run a single-file on-the-fly backup job purely for the purpose of naming the tape, and then creating my backup job using that tape.

An easy way round the re-using tapes problem is this:
Edit the task scheduler and add the unmanaged (/um) switch and tell it to pull media from the '4mm DDS' pool, then, whatever tape is in the drive, it will overwrite it. C:\DOS:>
C:\DOS:>RUN
RUN DOS RUN!!

Crundy,

Please give more details on how to do this. Where do I edit the task scheduler what line do I edit and what do I put in the line?

OK, Go 'start/programs/accessories/system tools/scheduled tasks' (or click here: file:///c:\winnt\tasks ) and you will see all your backup jobs you made.
Right-click on the one you want to edit, and click properties. You will see a textbox containing the command line code it will execute. You need to remove all references to "New Media" or whatever tape name you asked it to use, add the /um switch and add '/p "4mm DDS"' to tell it to pull tapes out of the '4mm DDS' pool. For example, I changed one of my backup jobs to this:

C:\WINNT\system32\NTBACKUP.EXE backup "@C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\Matrix week 1 Fri.bks" /n "Matrix week 1 Fri" /d "Matrix week 1 set" /v:no /r:no /rs:no /hc:eek:n /m normal /j "Matrix week 1 Fri" /l:s /um /p "4mm DDS"

All on one line of course.

This is for a job called "Matrix week 1 Fri", set name "Matrix week 1 set", which does a normal backup onto whatever tape is in the drive and names the tape "Matrix week 1 Fri".

Does this help? C:\DOS:>
C:\DOS:>RUN
RUN DOS RUN!!

I have inserted this info. Does this look correct to you?

C:\WINNT\system32\NTBACKUP.EXE backup "@C:\Documents and Settings\DWHSERVER\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\Weekday .bks" /n /um /d "Set created 11/12/2001 at 9:47 AM" /v:yes /r:no /rs:no /hc:eek:n /m normal /j "Weekday " /l:s '/p "4mm DDS"'

remove the single quotes around '/p "4mm DDS"' C:\DOS:>
C:\DOS:>RUN
RUN DOS RUN!!

Also, you need to put the name of the tape straight after the /n switch, e.g. /n "Weekday"

Otherwise looks fine.

Read the documentation for ntbackup.exe to check the values of the other switches to make sure you're using the correct values. C:\DOS:>
C:\DOS:>RUN
RUN DOS RUN!!

I got the following message with my changes.

Here is what is there
C:\WINNT\system32\NTBACKUP.EXE backup "@C:\Documents and Settings\DWHSERVER\Local Settings\Application Data\Microsoft\Windows NT\NTBackup\data\Weekday .bks" /n"Weekday" /um /d "Set created 11/12/2001 at 9:47 AM" /v:yes /r:no /rs:no /hc:eek:n /m normal /j "Weekday " /l:s /p "4mm DDS"

The message was, "Invalid command line parameter '/n "weekday"

Any ideas?

You didn't leave a space between /n and "Weekday" C:\DOS:>
C:\DOS:>RUN
RUN DOS RUN!!
