All,

I'm new to Pervasive SQL as well as my organization. We are using Pervasive 8.6 SP2 on our server and Computer Associates BrightStor backup software with the open file backup module.

At a local ISSA meeting I was talking to another person who uses Pervasive SQL at his organization and he reported that the open backup agent is not enough that you need to tell pervasive that you're about to execute a backup job each time you go to backup or the files don't get backed up in such a way that we could actually restore.

I know MS-SQL very well and how to back it up, but Pervasive as I said is very new to me.

What should I be doign with Pervasive to ensure my nightly server tape backups are working properly?

Do you have open Pervasive data files when your backup runs?
If so, you need to put them into Continuous Operations mode (check the Pervasive Library at for more information about Continuous Ops.
If your data files are closed (and you can guarantee they are closed), then you don't need to do anything special.

I'm brand new to Pervasive - how do I tell how this works? Does the pervasive data engine have to be stopped on the server. In theory everybody is logged out of ASC (system using pervasive) after our stores close each night but there are usually disconnected terminal server sessions and not necessairly log outs.

The engine does not need to be stopped. You can use the Monitor to see if there are open files (and disconnect them).
Search for "Continuous Operations" in the library and you'll find a lot of good information.

Thanks Mirtheil - I will do as you suggest and go search the library but can't till tomorrow, I have to finish a project up first.
