ok, I have an IBM Windows XP Home Computer, and just had an HD crash. I have recovered it, but I would like to add a secondary hard drive and have the system back up my data every so often automatically. I dont want to use another partition on the same drive, because if the HD goes, then I still cant get to the data....

I was thinking either...

1. Add a second hard drive internally.

Or 2. Put the new HD in an external enclosure, and hook it up by USB or Firewire.

Whats the best way to do this, AND how do I get it to automatically backup only certain folders (or the whole HD, not sure yet), every so often?

If it were me, I would use an external drive. They are easy to install, and can backup more than one machine.

Get a backup program. They will allow you to pick what and when is backed up. I don't know the best one. I use BackupMyPC, but there are a lot of choices.
