I have a Windows 2003 storage device that I am trying to back up using Backup Exec 8.6 from another server. The Backup runs OK and backs up several devices but then fails at the last one, the 2003 server sytem state, with the following message:

Directory not found. Can not backup directory
\Registry\C:\WINDOWS\system32\config\systemprofile and its subdirectories

As far as I can see this path does not exist.

I have altered the permissions so that the systemprofile folder in the path (without \Registry) allows Domian Admins full control, as this is how we connect to this device, but the job still fails.

Can anyone offer any advice?

Thanks in advance.

To backup Windows 2003 you need at least Backup Exec 9.0 revision 4454 - much better to go to 9.1 though.

8.6 can't backup windows 2003 because it can't understand Shadow Copy Components which are a new thing in windows 2003.

Do you mean I cannot backup the system state from 2003 or that I cannot back up anything from 2003?

As you can see from this section of the log I am able to backup some stuff but obviously because it is not doing the system state it is flagging the job as a Fail.

You can't backup the system state of Windows 2003 with 8.6, the versions above are the only one that works.

You can however still do the files without issues.

word of warning - if something happens and you have to ring or email veritas for support - they will not help you at all if you are backing up 2003 with 8.6.

Thanks for the Info Justin.

If you dont want to upgrade to BE91, you can do a Backup of your system states with Nt backup (fom Win2K3)

Then with BE86 you will be able to backup the backup of Nt backup because it will see it as a file.

but its not the best practices@!

Le monde c'est de la marde!

I had the exact same issue when trying to backup the registry on a Windows 2003 server with BackupExec 8.6.

I finally stopped the Backup Exec Remote Agent on the Windows 2003 server and reinstalled it. This cleared my problem. If you still have problems after doing that, try backing up the system state using ntbackup and just backup that file.
