Backup Exec Causing High Utilisation

We are running Backup Exec 8.5 on a NetWare 5.1 server, which backs up a Netware 5.0 server using the agent software. However, each time it is run it causes the 5.0 server's utilisation to shoot up to 35% plus and the backup has to be aborted due to the fact it goes on a major go slow.
Can anybody help?

The servers are all running the latest service packs.
