I am using Backup Exec 10.0 w/ an HP MSL6030 tape library. I have three media sets; 1 for full, 1 for differentials & one for test media. I have found that you have specify the slots in the backup job + the media set you want to use. Other wise backup exec pulls any media it wants. This doesn't seem right to me. Does anyone have any ideas?

That is correct and by design. You can partition the library and point it a set of tapes and media sets

Great thanks, MY impression of tape libraries was that the slot location of the media did not matter. The tape library would locate the proper media using the media sets...Guess not...

Well..you wouldnt want it to overwrite a tape if there is valuable data..and randomly pick a tape...if you back spanned two media..something has to keep track of prevent another job from overwriting one of the tapes..otherwise the backup is usless. You want a logic to use the oldest tape according to the rules.
Partitioning is probably the way to go. Just keep in mind that if a job targets a parition and runs out of tape or tape is protected it will not go outside the slots in the partition to pick up other tapes...even if you have blank or usable media in other slots outside the partition
